Meet our artists: Yuki KiharaSpeciaal voor BredaPhoto Festival 2026 maakte kunstanaar Yuki Kihara de site-specific installatie Shipwrecks of Empire. In haar werk onderzoekt ze de geschiedenis van Europees kolonialisme in de Stille Oceaan en de impact daarvan op Sāmoa en andere Pacifische volken.Als bezoeker loop je door de installatie heen. Historische beelden van Europese en Amerikaanse scheepswrakken worden gecombineerd met hedendaagse beelden van het gezonken Nieuw-Zeelandse marineschip Manawanui en drijvende zeecontainers.

De beelden zijn opgeblazen en aangebracht op platte constructies die ook voor theaterdecors worden gebruikt. Zo komen verleden en heden samen en wordt zichtbaar hoe de gevolgen van kolonialisme nog altijd doorwerken.

Deze installatie is speciaal voor BredaPhoto Festival gemaakt en is te zien in het Koepel District. 🇬🇧 Especially for BredaPhoto Festival 2026, artist Yuki Kihara created the site-specific installation Shipwrecks of Empire. In her work, she explores the history of European colonialism in the Pacific and its impact on Sāmoa and other Pacific peoples.As a visitor, you walk through the installation itself. Historical images of European and American shipwrecks are combined with contemporary images of the New Zealand naval vessel Manawanui, which sank off the coast of Sāmoa in 2024, and floating shipping containers.

The images have been enlarged and mounted on flat structures also used for theatre sets. In this way, past and present come together, revealing how the effects of colonialism continue to resonate today.Read more about the project here. The installation was created especially for BredaPhoto Festival and is on view in the Koepel District.

MPB x BredaPhoto Photography Awards 2026Samen met MPB organiseert BredaPhoto voor het eerst de BredaPhoto Photography Awards, open voor alle fotografen in Nederland en België. Dit jaar draait het festival om verhalen over troost en veerkracht. BredaPhoto brengt fotografische perspectieven samen op de manieren waarop mensen kracht, verbinding en betekenis vinden, juist in deze tijden van verandering en onzekerheid.

We nodigen fotografen uit die vanuit verschillende genres en werkwijzen werken om op hun eigen manier op het thema te reageren. 

MPB is ‘s werelds het grootste online platform voor het kopen, verkopen en inruilen van tweedehands foto- en videoapparatuur.

🇬🇧 Together with MPB, BredaPhoto is launching its first-ever photography awards, open to all photographers across the Netherlands and Belgium. This year’s festival reflects on stories of solace and resilience. BredaPhoto brings together photographic perspectives on the ways people find strength, connection and meaning, particularly in times of change and uncertainty.

We invite photographers working across genres and approaches to respond to the theme in their own way.
